Hey everyone! My name is Kamryn Yerga and I am a Junior who is studying Biology and Spanish. My plan is to attend a Global Health Masters program, and eventually become a Physician's Assistant who can promote women’s health in all countries.
I initially joined Dr. Young’s Locomotion Lab last semester as an assistant. Now it is time for me to start my own research. What intrigued me the most about Dr. Young’s lab is that she focused on the whole organism, integrating anatomy, physiology, ecology, and evolution in her work. As a lab assistant I was able to assist Alli on her study of the ACL. Alli was able to show me how raw data is collected, how to interact with subjects, and follow a solid research plan. Now I will take her advice and work on a brand new study. This new study involves squirrels, and man, does our campus have plenty. Over the summer, my research partner Hannah and I will be taking video recordings of squirrels in two different locations. One population will be from the center of campus, or the urban part, and the other population will be in a more rural area. I will take appropriate measures of weight, length and tag each subject. This way I can calculate body mass of each squirrel and be able to compare two different populations. My work is important because we need to realize how we are affecting environments as humans. Urbanization is causing increased habitat fragmentation, decreased species diversity, and overall just affecting different small mammals. I hope to advocate for these species in urbanized areas, just as I would like to advocate for women’s health in the future. Super excited to start this process! |
