Hi, it’s Hannah again! My research and interests have both changed a little since my last update. I had such a great time doing research this summer that I’m now debating between going into research and going into medicine. I currently plan on applying to masters programs in public health while I decide between these two options.
I’m now a senior in the lab and am just finishing up my senior comprehensive based on my research from this summer. Dr. Young, Kamryn and I were at Saint Mary’s doing research on fox squirrels like planned, but we ended up focusing only on on campus squirrels because of difficulties capturing squirrels in the nature area. I was comparing body mass along an increasing distance from the dining hall. To do this, we would trap squirrels at various locations on campus and then measure their body mass and the length of their body, tail, ear, and hindfoot. We also recorded the sex and where they were captured before tagging and releasing the animal. We didn’t find any significant results for this comparison, but this is a new project and we’re hoping the data we’ve collected will serve as the base for a long term study on the condition of the squirrels at Saint Mary’s. We’ve started trapping again this fall so we’re already working on expanding our data set. So far I’ve already had a few opportunities to share my findings. I got to present at STEM fall poster day and speak to various groups on campus. I’m looking forward to presenting my poster again at SICB’s annual conference in Austin, TX this January and at Belles Bio Days in the spring. |
