Hey there! My name is Megan Grush (another one, I know) and I am new to Dr. Young’s Locomotion Lab at Saint Mary’s. I am a Junior Biology major with plans to attend Chiropractic school following graduation.
I was interested in Dr. Young’s lab mainly due to the ACL project. Because of my plans after graduation, I thought this would be a perfect fit for me! I believe participating in this lab will give me a broader sense of how we as humans move as a whole, which will definitely benefit me in my future plans. I will be continuing the research and data collection from Alli and Madeline by expanding the topic to include men in the tri-campus community of Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, and the University of Notre Dame, specifically focusing on right knee flexion. Data collected here will contribute to the development of an app to prevent ACL injuries. The current plan is to hopefully start collecting data this spring and most likely continue into the fall to get as many samples as possible. As of right now, I am just getting a feel for the lab, reading up on ACL injuries, and completing tasks for the very beginning stages of my senior comp. Hi everyone, it's Megan W again! The past few weeks, we have added several new members to the lab and I am super excited to see what everyone is going to contribute. I have been speaking with Dr. Young about starting my own project next fall and I have decided to study Q angle differences in injured vs. non-injured women at Saint Mary's College. Over the next several weeks, I will be working on my IRB proposal in the hopes that I can get everything approved and processed.
Being a member of this lab has given me an added perspective to my Nursing major. I have been busy applying for nursing internships on orthopedic units. I will definitely be able to utilize what I have learned thus far in this lab to help my future patients. I look forward to starting my project next semester to contribute to the overall ACL project! Hi, it’s Hannah again with another update! I’m in my last semester at Saint Mary’s and in the lab so a lot of things are wrapping up and a lot of exciting new things are starting! The deadlines for my grad school applications are all over the place, so some aren’t even submitted yet but I’ve already been accepted to one! Earlier this month I got to go to Austin, TX to attend SICB’s annual meeting and present my poster. I had an incredible time; it was definitely one of the highlights of my research experience. I got to meet lots of other researchers from other undergraduate students attending their first conference to experienced Ph.D.’s who’ve been running their own lab for years. It was a really inspiring thing to be surrounded so many other people who were all so excited about scientific research and the discovery of new knowledge. It really affirmed my decision to pursue this path myself. Check out the slideshow below! One of the best parts of this experience was the plenary talk by Sheila Patek; her explanation of her emphatic love for discovering new knowledge, of the joy she found in starting with a question and then working to discover that answer, closely paralleled my own experience this summer of falling in love with doing research. I would highly recommend that any undergraduate interested in research who has the opportunity to attend a scientific conference do so because it has been one of the highlights of my collegiate experience! Now I am looking forward to presenting at Belle Bio Days at the end of February, finishing this last semester at Saint Mary’s, and graduating in May! |
